A wood temple for Dikling. Would you also like to contribute?
A Buddhist campus with a wood temple, school and residential buildings is being built in Dikling – in the Sikkimese Himalayas – as part of an Indian-European collaboration. Dhagpo Switzerland is supporting the realisation of this unique project with an appeal for donations.
As the old Diklings Buddhist temple became inaccessible from the village due to the construction of Pakyong airport, a new temple is being built on a mystical plot of land – once inhabited by a Jogi, with a view of a mountain silhouette in the shape of a lying Buddha. This temple is to be built in solid wood. Because the art of timber construction has been forgotten in Sikkim, European architects and timber construction specialists were called in to help. Inspired by old Buddhist wood temples, the aim is to create an architecture that is both traditional and contemporary.
A lively place is to be created on the temple campus, where people will live, teach, study, work and practise in accordance with Buddha’s eightfold path. On the one hand, the teachings of Buddha will be passed on in the temple and retreats will be offered for interested people from all over the world. On the other hand, the place is intended to be a home for socially disadvantaged children and offer training in Buddhist teaching or carpentry. The wood temple is also a kind of archive where all of Buddha’s teachings are preserved for future generations in the form of the Kangyur texts.
The wood temple is currently being built as a first step. The project is in need of support for its realisation.
The total cost of the temple is estimated at CHF 400,000. CHF 120,000 has been collected, of which CHF 60,000 has already been used for the earthworks, foundations and part of the wood procurement. Of the remaining amount of CHF 280,000, CHF 140,000 is outstanding for the continuation of the construction work in 2025. Every contribution is very welcome and helps with the realisation of this unique wood temple.
